According to the ASPCA, shelters and rescues took in 5.8 million dogs and cats in 2024. The good news is that about 2 million dogs were adopted, but dogs, especially large dogs and especially older dogs, are spending longer in shelters over the last five years, contributing to a capacity crisis and limiting space for new ones.

Did you know that nearly one in ten shelter dogs are in Florida?
Dogs end up in shelters for a variety of reasons, and sometimes there's truly no other option. But there's a lot we can do as responsible dog owners. Being a responsible pet owner is one of the greatest gifts you can give an animal—and one of the best ways to honor Healy Pack's mission. Here are some ideas:
Make adoption your first option. Healy Pack founder Linda Healy said, "Every dog bought from a breeder or pet store means another shelter dog loses their chance. A dog is put down every nine seconds in the United States. We can change that—one adoption at a time. See our adoptable dogs on our Adoption page
Plan ahead for your pet’s future. Ask yourself: Who will care for my dog if I can't?
Think carefully before adopting—choose a pet that fits your lifestyle and circumstances. For example, do you have the time and energy for a puppy? A calm senior dog may be a better fit than an energetic puppy, especially if you're a little older.
Always spay or neuter your pets, provide regular training, exercise, and nutritious food, and make sure they wear identification at all times.
Share these ideas with friends and family! You may be helping keep a pet out of a shelter!
Above all, love your pet deeply—and you’ll be loved in return.
